RFID Technology Helps Timing of 2022 Winter Olympics Speed Skating Competition

  • 2022/03/18

Viewers who have watched the live broadcast of the 2022 Winter Olympics speed skating competition should know that the time it takes athletes to complete a week of skating will be displayed in real time at the bottom right of the TV broadcast screen, so as to rank the participating team members. Even if there is no reference when the athletes cross the line in a single-start competition, or when multiple athletes compete fiercely at the finish line, it is difficult to distinguish the winner with the naked eye, the audience in front of the TV screen can always know the precise race time of the athletes in time.

In this Beijing Winter Paralympics speed skating competition, each athlete must wear a small chip with an RFID electronic tag. The equipment manufacturers responsible for timing and scoring have placed many induction coils under the ice in the arena. When the athlete passes through the coil, the RFID reading device in the coil will conduct non-contact two-way data communication with the chip on the athlete's body through radio frequency to record the corresponding information, and immediately transmit it to the data collection on the sidelines through the short-wave frequency band wireless channel equipment ("black box" in the picture).
