What is the hottest now, that unmanned retail stores must come to our mind. Since the end of last year, Amazon in the United States opened the first unmanned entity Amazon Go. And this year, series of Chinese retail giants like Alibaba, JingDong, Wa Haha, T-mall have set their own unmanned store to start the venture. Today let’s talk about the important part of unmanned stores, RFID technology.

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is a technology to record the presence of an object using radio signals. It is used for inventory control or timing sporting events. RFID is not a replacement for the barcoding, but a complement for distant reading of codes. The technology is used for automatically identifying a person, a package or an item. To do this, it relies on RFID tags. These are small transponders (combined radio receiver and transmitter) that will transmit identity information over a short distance, when asked. The other piece to make use of RFID tags is an RFID tag reader.

Conceptually, RFID is similar to barcode technology. Barcode technology is to bar code information attached to the items, through the scanning gun on the bar code on the items to scan, to obtain the information of the items. The RFID technology will be attached to the RFID tag on the items, through the RF signal to the label of the information read to the RFID reader, so as to obtain the unique information of the items. Compared to the traditional bar code, RFID technology advantages are as follows:

1. Quick scan
The RFID reader can simultaneously read and read multiple RFID tags, compared to a barcode that can only be scanned for a barcode at a time.

2. Penetrating and barrier-free reading
In the case of coverage, RFID can penetrate non-metallic or non-transparent materials such as paper, wood and plastic, and be able to communicate with each other. And the bar code scanner must be in close proximity and no objects blocked in order to be able to identify the bar code.

3. Large memory capacity
Barcode capacity is 30 characters or so, 2D bar code maximum capacity can be stored 2 to 3000 characters, the largest number of RFID capacity is a few trillion characters, with the development of memory carriers, data capacity has been expanding the trend.

4. Small size and diverse shapes
RFID reading is not limited by size and shape, do not need to read the accuracy of the paper with the fixed size and printing quality, unlike the barcode prone to deformation and breakage and other problems caused by unrecognized. In addition, RFID tags can be more miniaturized and diverse forms of development to apply to different products.

In the short term, "Unmanned Store" is difficult to become the next burst of RFID technology, but it is the RFID technology in the field of consumer retail a new attempt. Of course, "unmanned retail stores" reason RFID technology attracted attention now, the value of this new retail form is also to the line of customer consumption of large data collection. Overall, the unmanned retail stores are still in the early days of technology exploration, so it is too early for the real unattended.
